About Us

Our Purpose

"Every doctrine which does not reach the one thing necessary, every separated philosophy, will remain deceived by false appearances. It will be a doctrine, it will not be Philosophy." - Maurice Blondel, 1861-1949

The Methexis Institute is a research-led institution designed to promote the advanced study of theology and philosophy.  It is founded on the conviction that Theology and Philosophy should be studied together. For the separation of these two disciplines is a relic of the late-Medieval university that had sundered the method of philosophy from its highest idea.  We cannot, however, begin to comprehend the main currents of Western culture without knowledge of both the Hebraic and the Hellenic traditions. And we cannot begin to grapple with the influence of the major world religions without interrogating these seminal ideas that continue to shape our world.

New Initiative

For many years, the progress of scholarship in the Arts and Humanities has been hindered by the inscrutable prejudices of grant-making committees, which have been empowered to dispense funding that is essential for public and impactful scholarship on an international scale.

We propose to break this monopoly by creating the Methexis Institute. This Institute will be an independent, non-denominational, and non-profit corporation that is designed for the purpose of sponsoring critical yet underfunded currents of academic research in Theology and Philosophy. Its sponsorship will primarily include fundraising, hosting events, and publicizing the scholarly works and public engagement activities of its research fellows, advisors, and associates.

Future Plans

We plan to build a hybrid platform to sponsor innovative research in Theology and Philosophy. This platform will enable our Fellows to solicit donations and generate revenue to support the public impact and reception of scholarly works.

Our short-term goal will be to create a fair and financially sustainable Institute to collect and distribute funding in support of critical yet underfunded scholarship in Theology and Philosophy. We aim, for this purpose, to solicit unrestricted donations in support of the general purposes of the Institute, and restricted donations made on behalf of specific members and research projects. Crucially, the dissemination of these general purpose funds will be decided upon by the leadership and advisors in an authorized budget of annual and discretionary expenditures.
